Dirty Dozen – 12 Telltale Signs that Scream “AI-Generated”

You know that feeling when you bite into what looks like a warm, gooey chocolate chip cookie, only to realize it’s oatmeal raisin? That’s what reading AI-generated content often feels like. On the surface, it checks all the boxes: spelling, grammar, structure, flow, and so on. But the soul? The inspiration? The lump in your throat? All of these are likely to be missing in action. As the founder of a long-standing content agency in Toronto, I’ve seen way too many businesses unknowingly serve up this kind of content. And it breaks my heart a little because your brand deserves more than a bland, robotic echo of who you are. It deserves to sound like you, connect like you, and yes, maybe even crack a bad dad joke like you.

I’m not an AI-hater, and I’m not here to drag the machines (we use them too, in small, non-threatening doses). But let’s be real: if your AI-generated content reads like it was assembled by a committee of polite but clueless interns, how will that robotic drivel actually connect with and engage your audience?

In this blog post, I’ll summarize the 12 dead giveaways that your content was probably birthed by a bot. If you spot these in your own writing, do something about it! I’ll also cover how to humanize your content and win back your audience. Ask these key questions as you audit your content:

1. Is it giving corporate robot vibes?

What it looks like:

“Utilizing strategic methodologies to optimize organizational outcomes.”

Real-life example:

An AI tool might write: “The implementation of synergistic frameworks can enhance business scalability.”
An actual person might simply say: “Working together smarter helps your business grow.”

Fix it:

Write like you speak. Read your content out loud. If it feels like you’re auditioning for a corporate training video from the 90s, tone it down.

2. Is the sentence factory in overdrive?

What it looks like:

Every sentence is the same length. Every paragraph is the same shape. Everything flows in a rigid pattern like a metronome with no soul.

Real-life example:

Content marketing is important. It helps businesses grow. You need a good strategy. You can hire a content agency.

Fix it:

Mix it up. Short sentence. Long one. Maybe even a playful fragment. Keep your reader guessing.

3. Oh, wait… How did we get here?

What it looks like:

Topic A ends abruptly. Topic B begins with no clear connection.

Real-life example:

“Social media is essential for brand visibility. Next, let’s discuss payroll management.”

Fix it:

Use natural transitions. Think of it like hosting a dinner party. Would you whisk your guests from appetizers to dessert without the main course?

4. Did your toaster write this?

What it looks like:

Flat. Emotionless. All facts, no flair.

Real-life example:

“The business was founded in 2010 and continues to provide stellar services.”

Fix it:

Infuse personality. Add a metaphor. Crack a joke. Include an example.

5. Sounds legit…until you Google it? Uh oh!

What it looks like:

Vague stats. Bold claims with zero backup.

Real-life example:

“80% of customers prefer blue logos.”

Fix it:

If you’re using data, cite it. Better yet, link to it.

6. Is there zero vibe and no soul?

What it looks like:

No opinion. No unique take. No inside jokes or real-life references.

Real-life example:

“Businesses must adapt to industry trends to stay competitive.”

Fix it:

Add personal stories. Refer to your favourite coffee shop and why one particular barista always nails your perfect brew. Throw in a memorable dialogue from your fave movie.

7. Is it still the same ol’ song, different day?

What it looks like:

You’ve seen it all too often before. A drab blog post with surface-level points.

Real-life example:

“Content marketing helps build brand awareness.”

Fix it:

Dig deeper and ask what hasn’t been said about this topic.

8. Says, who exactly?

What it looks like:

Statements that sound like facts, with no attribution.

Real-life example:

“Studies show that blogging increases sales.”

Fix it:

Google the claim. If you can’t back it up, don’t include it.

9. Isn’t that just plain obvious?

What it looks like:

No takeaways and no new perspective.

Real-life example:

“Email marketing is cost-effective. It reaches customers directly.”

Fix it:

Push further to ask “Why does this matter?” and “What can my reader do with this?” Offer your Point-Of-View (POV) content.

10. Did your Brand Manager approve this?

What it looks like:

Tone-deaf content that doesn’t match your brand’s personality.

Real-life example:

A youth-focused skincare brand posts: “Our products exemplify dermatological excellence and molecular efficacy.” (Ouch, that makes my skin hurt!)

Fix it:

Know your voice and stay consistent.

11. Starts with a yawn, ends with a whimper

What it looks like:

Dry intros and limp conclusions.

Real-life example:

A blog that starts with “In today’s fast-paced world…” and ends with “In conclusion, it is important to use marketing tools like LiveChat.”

Fix it:

Hook your reader with a story or unexpected statement and end with a punchy takeaway.

12. SEO stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey

What it looks like:

Repetitive keyword use that makes your content sound unnatural and meaningless rather than a valuable piece of writing. Every paragraph shoehorns in the same phrase, as if Google’s sitting there with a clicker, counting how many times you say “affordable digital marketing services in Toronto.”

Real-life example:

“If you’re looking for affordable digital marketing services in Toronto, our affordable digital marketing services in Toronto offer the most affordable digital marketing services in Toronto.”

Please. Make it stop.

Fix it:

Focus on natural language. Use synonyms, context, and conversational flow instead of hammering the same phrase into every third sentence. The goal is to answer what your reader is searching for, not just repeat it mindlessly. Write content for humans first, and search engines will follow.

So, What’s the Verdict?

If your blog post, article, or web copy reads like it was written by a spreadsheet, it’s time for human intervention.
AI is an amazingly helpful tool, but it’s a generator, not a writer. It doesn’t understand nuance, emotion, or the glorious weirdness of human communication. That’s where real writers, the kind who get what your brand is about and can make people feel things, come in.

At MintCopy, we’re human inside and out. We are willingly and unwittingly bullied every day by our co-workers who decide when we must stop whatever we are doing to deliver belly rubs—one wagging tail and we succumb. Midnight trips to the refrigerator might easily be followed by the creation of a brilliant article about the impact of microplastics on our bodies. And yes, we suffer from the occasional writer’s block, only to emerge with renewed enthusiasm and creativity required to crank out a pillar page on choosing between various roofing materials. Of course, AI generators can produce any and all of these. The difference is, our copywriters know how to blend clarity with creativity, information with inspiration, and SEO with soul. We use AI where it helps, but we never let it take over the wheel.

So the next time you wonder, “Could an AI tool have written this?”—ask instead, “Do I want my customers to feel that way?”
